Weekly Favorites 09/02/18 to 09/08/18

Weekly FavoritesTime for another batch of Weekly Favorites! This week, there was no theme to follow, just whatever I found that was interesting. That's how I cook sometimes. Just go to the market without a plan and piece together a menu based off of what they have available!

Pommes Anna: French Melted Potatoes - via Sweet Paul

I've long a been a fan of Sweet Paul. He comes up with some pretty cool stuff! A classic potatoes au gratin has always a favorite comfort food dish of mine. Pommes Anna takes it to a whole new level!

Peaches and Cream Hand Pies - via Garden & Gun

I've discussed my love pastries and other baked goods in the past. These are portable, which of course, doubles their appeal! If you haven't checked out Garden & Gun before, they are such a great resource for southern comfort!

Herb Butter Salmon and Asparagus Foil Packs - Creme de la Crumb

I've eaten a few really good fish dishes lately, mostly in sandwich form. A few weeks ago in Seattle, I ate a really good Salmon Sandwich. Since then, I've had salmon on the brain! This easy salmon dish could really satisfy a craving!

How to Grow an Indoor Herb Garden - via Gardening Channel

For about a year now, I've had a spot set aside for a vegetable garden in the backyard. The spot is boxed in, ready for a raised garden to go in, but the grass is about two feet tall now. I still have plans to make a garden, someday. So, maybe an indoor herb garden is more my speed at this point.

Every week, I see all kinds of food and restaurant related articles. These are my favorites that made the cut!

Some King of he Hill to
help illustrate!
Well-done Meat May be Bad for Your Blood Pressure - via upi.com

I've never liked well done meat, for any reason. I've always thought anything over medium is over done. For me, the meat gets dried out and all of the flavor cooks out after that. Now there it looks like there is some science to back that up!

Alton Brown's Atlanta - via Garden & Gun

I've been to Atlanta once. Just passing through for work, I liked what I saw. Unfortunately back then, I didn't have much time to stop and explore. Now if I ever get a chance to go back, I can use Alton Brown as my guide! I'm not sure that I would follow his exact schedule, but everything from the apple fritter, to the burger, to the

We make our fair share of pizza around here and I have to say these are our some very good tips to making better pizza at home. I especially agree with using the ingredients sparingly. One of our favorites to make lately doesn't use cheese, but has spinach pesto and roasted chicken instead!

The Myth of Authenticity is Killing Tex Mex - via eater.com

I think when most people think about Texas cuisine, the first thing that comes to mind is Texas barbecue. While that is an important part of Texas food culture, an often overlooked cuisine is Tex Mex. I've found that a lot outsiders maybe don't get it at first. "Why would I want to eat something smothered in melted cheese?" Well, first of all,

that melted cheese is called queso and it is awesome! Once you get passed the basics of the queso and the chips and salsa, there are many diverse flavors that are directly influenced by our neighbors to the south!

The Rules of Cornbread - via Garden & Gun

The Cornbread Debate

Nothing says Southern, quite like cornbread. I've found that cornbread is also one of the most hotly debated food items out there. The thing they argue the most about is the addition of sugar. My Grandma Dorothy put it in her homemade cornbread. While I don't necessarily think it belongs, when I follow here recipe I tend to put it in there. Here, Garden & Gun takes up the debate and tries to answer a few questions
surrounding this delicious concoction.

I honestly believe that best way to measure to caliber of a Mexican restaurant is by the quality of their queso! Luckily I live in Houston, where we have no shortage of  good Mexican restaurants to choose from! The Houston Press did the hard work for us here and diligently sampled 20 of the great city's quesos to bring us this Top 20 List. Spoiler, Torchy's Tacos came in at number one.

One of my favorite fish preparations is a whole redfish with the scales removed, crusted in Kosher salt, with some olive oil and fresh lemon. The fish comes out of the oven and just falls apart! When i came across this Shrimp on the Rocks recipe, it struck me as similar to the fish recipe. This will be a must try for me!

Not long ago, Waco was just another small Texas town. Baylor University helped put it on the map, but it wasn't a destination. But then a few years back, Chip and Joanna Gaines helped put Waco on the map with everyone's favorite show. Then they made Waco a destination when they opened up shop at Magnolia Market. Now, it looks they may have done it again with the opening of Magnolia Table.

This popcorn is definitely getting filed away for our next movie night at home!
